Exploring The Internet

I am a newbie at WordPress. It is so different than Google Blogger. Everyday I learn a little bit from WordPress Support Forum or other people’s blogs. I want to change the title My First Online Business Story to be something else, but I don’t know how yet. So any advice and comments about that are welcome.

By the way both WordPres.com and Google Blogger are Free service that offers a free blog site. If you are thinking to have one, these two are good choices for you to start. Check out Comparison of Google Blogger and WordPress.com Blog to make a wise decision before you choose one.

Update 7/15/2008: I learned how to change the title now which I talked about it here in this post: Learning How to Blog With WordPress - Part 2. If you are using a full version of WordPress blog (WordPress.org blog), by default your blog’s permalink (permanent link) looks like this http://sitename.com/?p=123 which is urgly and Google will penalize for this kind of urls (web addresses). Therefore it is very important that you optimize your permalinks first before you want to continue to do anything else with your WordPress blog. You don’t need to learn the hard way like me:

• Login to your WordPress Dashboard; click on Options/Permalinks (for WordPress 2.3.x) or Settings/Permalinks (for WordPress 2.5.x). See the screenshot below; it is taken from WordPress 2.5.1:

• Look for Common Settings under Customize Permalink Structure section. There are a couple of choices offered by WordPress. See the screenshot below:

• In the Custom Structure, type in/copy and paste /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/ in the text field. Your permalink will turn out to be: http://www.sitename.com/2008/7/15/postname/. According to Using Permalinks<<WordPress Codex, set up your permalink like this is always a good start.

• Alternatively in the Custom Structure, type in/copy and paste /%category%/%postname%/ in the text field. Your permalink will turn out to be: http://www.sitename.com/category/postname/.

• Make sure you scroll all the way down and click on Save Changes to save it.
